How to add Monitoring Sensor to multiple nodes using Monitoring Template

For larger infrastructures, applying sensors one by one can be tedious. Nevertheless, NetCrunch provides tools for more convenient management for both small and large numbers of nodes. Below you will find a simple example of adding Pending Reboot sensor to a large number of nodes.

Just like Monitoring Packs are designed for rule-based monitoring and alerting, the Monitoring Templates can be used for rule-based monitoring that requires sensors to be configured for each of the monitored nodes. Follow the steps below to see how to make it happen.

Create a Monitoring Template with Pending Reboot Sensor:

To use a Monitoring Template, you must create it first - this paragraph will guide you through the template creation process:

1. From the main program menu + Node Monitoring Template
2. Enter a template name and click OK button
3. Add the Monitoring Sensors section to the template by clicking on include button
4. Click on + Add Monitoring Sensor button and add the Pending Reboot sensor
5. Set the Reference node and configure other settings

Note: Only metrics and statuses that are available on the Reference node can be used when configuring the Monitoring Sensor on the Monitoring Template or for multiple nodes. This is why it is always a good idea to select a node with the most extensive monitoring scope (for the given type of device or system) to be used as a reference node.

Create a View for nodes of desired organizations only

After creating the template, you must select the nodes where you want to apply the template. Extracting such nodes in a more complex environment can be difficult, but here dynamic views can come in handy. In our case we want to include nodes from selected organizational groups - this is why we will use the 'Organization' property (an organizational group that can be a department, project-based, or other). This paragraph shows you how to create a dynamic view.

1. From the Atlas Tree right-click Custom Views New View
2. Click on Dynamic View button
3. Set Operating System Monitoring is equal to Windows condition,
   then click on Add condition button and set
   Organization is in list and select desired organizations
4. Save the view by clicking on OK button

Assign the template to nodes

Now, having both - the Template and the desired Nodes selected, all you have to do is apply the Template to the Nodes. This paragraph details how to achieve it.

1. Open Map tab of the dynamic view
2. Press Ctrl+A to select all nodes in the view
3. Right-click and open Node Settings of the nodes in multi-selection. (Or Press Shift+F2)
4. Select the template for the nodes
5. Save the settings by clicking OK button
