Integrating MessageBird with NetCrunch

MessageBird is a cloud communications platform that allows sending SMS notifications among other things. This article will help you configure NetCrunch to send SMS/text message notification through MessageBird.

Enable NetCrunch to send SMS through MessageBird

Sending a text message from NetCrunch through MessageBird requires setting up a relevant Integration Profile. To do so, click Monitoring Integration Profiles at the top of the NetCrunch application.

In the editor, you will be asked for your MessageBird Acces Key:

MessageBird Integration Profile

At the moment of writing this article, the mentioned Access Key can be found in the MessageBird Developers dashboard -> API access tab. We suggest creating a fresh new Key, exclusively for NetCrunch:

Create an alert sending the SMS through the MessageBird

When Integration Profile is ready, you can create an alerting script (or edit existing one), to send NetCrunch alert SMS through the MessageBird. Below you will find simple steps on how to create a new alerting script.

  1. Click MonitoringAlerting Escalation Script
  2. In the Alerting Scripts Window click Add Alerting Script
  3. Click Add and select Action to Run immediately
  4. Click Integrations tab and select SMS via MessageBird
Create Alerting Script that sends SMS via MessageBird

A new window will appear, where you have to provide a destination (phone) number which should receive an SMS, then you can send a test SMS by clicking on the Test button. A small window with the test procedure will appear, and if everything is configured properly, the test should display a "Successfully executed" message. This test SMS should now appear in both: MessageBird SMS dashboard and on the mobile device that is using the destination number provided earlier.

Test the MessageBird integration

Now select a node and create a test alert (for example Node Monitoring Disabled) that will use text message notification. Next, assign the alerting script to this alert. The following steps explain how to create a "Node Monitoring Disabled" alert for a single node.

  1. Right-click the node where you want to create an alert
  2. Select the Node Settings and click Alerts&Reports in the node settings window
  3. Click Add Alert, select the Basic tab and choose Node monitoring is disabled
  4. Right-click the new Alert and select Assign Predefined Alerting Script Your Script name
Assign the MessageBird Alerting Script

If you now trigger the alert (by disabling the Node Monitoring on the selected Node), an SMS will be sent to the relevant destination number. If such an alerting script is attached to various alerts, NetCrunch will send SMS each time the given alert is generated.
