Actions describe what is to be done when a particular event takes place. An example of an alerting action is emailing a specific user (or group of users) when an event such as 'Node DOWN' occurs on a monitored node.
An alert may have multiple actions defined and executed over a specified period. The program can perform several actions at different times, starting when an actual event occurs.
Alerting Action Types
All actions are divided into types and groups. Action types are organized by purpose in tabs in the Add Action window. Each tab contains actions grouped accordingly. See all action types and groups described below.
Basic
- Desktop
- Examples of this type of action include displaying an alert bar on the desktop, playing a sound, and displaying an alert dialog. Such notification actions will occur only on the computer where the Connection Broker is running and connected to the given server.
- Diagnostics
- Examples of this type of action include adding a traceroute to an alert message or including network services status in an alert message.
- Notify
- Automatically notifies a user or a group of users about an event. The notification method (email or text message (SMS)) is predefined in the program when users are set up, simplifying the creation of new actions. You do not need to specify the notification method for each event.
- Simple
- Allows for actions such as notifying a user via email or text message (SMS). Each time you define one of these actions, you must specify the recipient (e.g., phone number, destination host).
Control
- Computers
- Examples of this type of action include controlling a Windows service, restarting/shutting down a computer, running a program/script, setting an SNMP variable, terminating a process, or Wake on LAN.
- Linux
- Allows executing selected scripts such as restarting or shutting down a machine, restarting the SNMP daemon, sending memory/network status and processes list, and mounting/dismounting a CD-ROM.
- Windows
- Allows executing selected scripts such as starting or stopping an SNMP service, deleting a virtual drive, running the disk defragmenter, and terminating the Notepad.exe process.
- NetCrunch
- Allows changing the monitoring state of a node.
Logging
- Local
- Examples of this type of action include writing to a user-selected file and writing to the Windows event log.
- Remote
- Allows using SNMP alert and Syslog message actions.
