Damaging just one core in an 8-core Gigabit cable may decrease speed to just 100 Mb. Here's how you can set the alert condition to track such events.
- Open the Node Settings window of the relevant node (in this case a node representing switch). You can multi-select several switches at once. Go to the Monitoring tab.
- Scroll down to the SNMP section and click on the Custom tile to add a new alert definition.
- Choose the 'New Event for SNMP Performance Counter' and click on
<select counter>. - Now you need to select the relevant OID. From the list of available MIB objects select 'ifSpeed' (1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.5) and confirm your choice by clicking 'OK'
- Then click on the 'Next' to select an SNMP counter instance.
- Here you can list interfaces by one of the possible 'Key column' e.g. 'ifDescr'.
- Add the interface to be monitored.
- There are multiple Event Conditions to choose from. We strongly suggest selecting 'Threshold'.
When you set the average value or value to be greater than or less than some value, the alert will be triggered when the speed of the switch interface crosses the threshold value. In case the monitored speed parameter drops significantly, it may indicate that equipment is not configured properly or the cable needs to be replaced.
